May 14 — Gentleness and Self-Control
“…to malign no one, to be peaceable and gentle, showing
full consideration to everyone.”
Gentleness is often mistaken for weakness. In a world that
values assertiveness, speed, and strength, gentleness can seem out of place.
Yet Scripture presents it as a mark of maturity and strength under control.
Gentleness is not the absence of conviction—it is the presence of humility,
restraint, and care in how we relate to others. It reflects a heart that is
secure enough in God to respond without harshness or defensiveness.
Closely connected to gentleness is self-control.
Self-control is the ability to govern our reactions—to pause before speaking,
to resist impulsive responses, and to choose what is right rather than what is
immediate. Together, gentleness and self-control shape how we engage with
others, especially in moments of tension or disagreement.
Take a moment to reflect: How do I respond under
pressure? When you feel misunderstood, frustrated, or challenged, what
tends to come out—gentleness or sharpness, patience or reaction? These moments
reveal what is being formed within us. The Spirit is at work not only in what
we believe, but in how we respond.
Today, be attentive to one interaction where gentleness and
self-control are needed. When you feel a strong reaction rising, pause before
responding. Take a breath, and quietly pray, “Lord, guide my response.”
Choose words that reflect care and respect, even if the situation is difficult.
Notice how this changes the tone of the moment—not only for others, but within
your own heart.
Over time, gentleness becomes a quiet strength that shapes
your presence. Self-control becomes a steady guard over your words and actions.
Together, they reflect the character of Christ, who is both strong and gentle,
firm and gracious.
Loving Father,
— Titus 3:2
Thank You for Your gentleness toward me, even when I am weak or imperfect. I confess that I often react quickly and speak without care. Teach me to grow in gentleness and self-control.
When I feel pressure or frustration, help me to pause and turn to You. Shape my responses so that they reflect Your grace and truth. Guard my words, guide my actions, and give me a heart that considers others with humility and care. Let my life reflect the quiet strength of Christ in all that I do.
All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
