June 7 — The Way of Humility

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.”
— James 4:10

Humility is often misunderstood. It is sometimes seen as weakness, as lowering oneself unnecessarily, or as thinking less of who we are. But in Scripture, humility is not about diminishing our value—it is about placing ourselves rightly before God. It is a posture of trust, dependence, and openness. To humble ourselves before the Lord is to recognize that we are not the center. It is to release the need to control, to prove, or to elevate ourselves. It is to come before God honestly, aware of both our limitations and our need for Him. And yet, there is a promise: “He will exalt you.” This is not a call to self-promotion, but to trust in God’s timing and God’s way. Exaltation, in this sense, is not about status—it is about being lifted, strengthened, and placed where we are meant to be according to His purposes.

Pause and reflect: Where might pride be shaping my thoughts or actions? Are there places where you feel the need to be seen, to be right, or to remain in control? Humility invites you to release these burdens.

Today, consider one way you can practice humility. It may be listening more than speaking, choosing patience over reaction, or quietly trusting God without needing immediate recognition. You might pray, “Lord, help me to walk humbly with You.” Humility creates space. It opens the heart to receive God’s guidance. It softens our interactions with others. It frees us from the pressure of self-importance and places our trust where it belongs—in God’s care. And in time, you may find that as you humble yourself before Him, He lifts you—not in a way that draws attention to you, but in a way that brings you into deeper alignment with His will.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for inviting me to walk in humility before You. You know where pride and self-reliance take hold in my heart.

Help me to release the need to control, to be recognized, or to place myself above others. Teach me to trust You fully and to rest in Your guidance. Shape my heart to reflect humility and lead me in Your ways.

I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
