Love in Conflict
The following is part 10 of “Love that Binds”:
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider
what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible on your part, live at
peace with everyone.
—Romans 12:17-18
The Challenge of Conflict
Conflict is an inevitable part of life. Whether in our relationships, communities, or workplaces, disagreements and misunderstandings can arise, threatening to disrupt harmony. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to respond to conflict with love, humility, and a desire for peace.
The world often encourages retaliation, but Scripture teaches a different path—one that seeks reconciliation and reflects the love of God. Loving others in the midst of conflict requires courage and grace, but it has the power to transform hearts and restore relationships.
Jesus’ Example in Conflict
Jesus faced conflict throughout His ministry, from confrontations with religious leaders to betrayal by those closest to Him. Yet, He consistently responded with wisdom, grace, and love.
In Matthew 5:9, Jesus blesses peacemakers, calling them “sons of God.” His example reminds us that resolving conflict in a loving way is not only possible but also a reflection of our identity as His followers. Even on the cross, Jesus prayed for His persecutors, demonstrating that love has the power to overcome even the deepest divisions.
Practical Steps for Loving in Conflict
Loving others in times of conflict involves intentional actions and a heart grounded in God’s love. Here are practical steps to navigate conflict with love:
1. Seek Understanding: Listen carefully to the other person’s perspective, aiming to understand their feelings and concerns without judgment.
2. Respond with Grace: Avoid harsh words or retaliatory actions. Instead, choose a gentle response that diffuses tension (Proverbs 15:1).
3. Pursue Reconciliation: Take the initiative to restore peace, even if you feel the other person is at fault (Matthew 5:23-24).
4. Pray for Guidance: Ask God for wisdom and a heart of humility to approach the situation with love and patience.
5. Forgive Freely: Let go of bitterness and offer forgiveness, even if the other person does not apologize or change.
These steps, grounded in Scripture, help us reflect Christ’s
love even in challenging situations.
The Fruits of Loving in Conflict
When we choose to love in conflict, we open the door for healing, understanding, and growth. Conflict handled with love can deepen relationships, strengthen trust, and glorify God. As Paul writes in Colossians 3:13-14, love binds everything together in perfect harmony, even in the midst of disagreement.
While not every conflict will result in resolution, our
efforts to love and seek peace honor God and reflect His heart.
Reflection Questions
1. How do you typically respond to conflict? What might need to change to reflect God’s love more fully?
2. Is there a specific conflict in your life where you can choose love and pursue peace?
3. How
does Jesus’ example encourage you to approach conflict differently?
Prayer
Loving Father,
You have called me to love others, even in the midst of conflict. Teach me to respond with grace, humility, and a heart that seeks peace. When emotions run high, give me the wisdom to listen, the strength to forgive, and the courage to seek reconciliation. Help me to reflect Your love and bring glory to Your name in every situation.
I pray in the name of Jesus, Your Son. Amen.
