Clothed in Love
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity.
— Colossians 3:12–14
Paul’s imagery of “clothing” ourselves with virtues is intentional—these qualities are not meant to be occasional accessories but our daily spiritual attire. Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience are not optional in the Christian life; they are the marks of those who belong to Christ. Bearing with one another means we accept that differences, misunderstandings, and even offenses will happen, but we choose not to let them destroy the relationship. Forgiveness is not given because the other person has earned it, but because God has so freely forgiven us in Christ. And over all these virtues—like the belt or clasp that holds a garment together—we “put on love,” the binding force of perfect unity.
To “clothe ourselves” in these virtues requires daily awareness and intention. Each morning presents new opportunities to respond either from the flesh or from the Spirit. Love is not merely an emotion but an orientation of the heart that shapes how we think, speak, and act. When we consciously “dress” in love, we prepare ourselves to engage the world with Christlike grace—ready to forgive, to listen, and to build up rather than tear down. Such preparation transforms ordinary encounters into sacred opportunities for reconciliation and witness.
What “spiritual garment” do you most need to wear more consistently—compassion, humility, gentleness, patience, or forgiveness? How might consciously “putting on” these virtues each morning change the way you approach difficult people or situations? In what ways does love serve as the “bond of perfect unity” in your relationships, your church, or your community?
Today, begin your morning by picturing yourself putting on each virtue as you pray, asking God to help you keep them on throughout the day, especially in challenging interactions. When we clothe ourselves in love, we embody the unity we long to see.
Loving Father,
Thank You for calling me Your beloved. Help me to clothe myself each day in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Teach me to bear with others, to forgive freely, and to put on love as the bond of perfect unity.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
