December 3 — Isaiah 40:1–5
“Comfort, comfort My people,”
says your God.
“Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and proclaim to her
that her forced labor has been completed;
her iniquity has been pardoned.
For she has received from the hand of the LORD
double for all her sins.”
A voice of one calling:
“Prepare the way for the LORD in the wilderness;
make a straight highway for our God in the desert.
Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill made low;
the uneven ground will become smooth,
and the rugged land a plain.
And the glory of the LORD will be revealed,
and all humanity together will see it.”
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
—Isaiah 40:1-5
Isaiah 40 opens with a word so gentle, so unexpected, that it breaks like light into a weary soul: “Comfort, comfort My people.” God does not begin with rebuke, instruction, or strategy—He begins with tenderness. His people have suffered. They have carried burdens of guilt, sorrow, and loss. Into that heaviness, God speaks comfort not as an idea but as a promise. Advent is the season when this promise draws near. In Christ, God’s comfort takes on flesh. He comes not to the strong, but to the tired; not to the triumphant, but to the burdened. This comfort is not sentimental—it is the comfort of redemption, forgiveness, and restored relationship.
The call to “prepare the way of the Lord” is not merely about clearing physical paths; it speaks to the inner landscape of the heart. Valleys lifted up, mountains made low, rough places smoothed—this is the language of transformation. Advent invites us into this work. We prepare for Christ not by accomplishing something impressive but by opening ourselves to His rearranging grace. The coming of the Lord levels our pride, lifts our discouragement, and makes straight what has become twisted. When God prepares a way into our hearts, nothing remains untouched by His restoring power.
As you ponder Isaiah’s vision, reflect on these questions: What rugged or uneven places in your heart need God’s smoothing grace? Where do you feel low, in need of lifting? And where might pride, stubbornness, or fear stand like a mountain blocking your openness to God’s work? Think also about the promise that God’s glory will be revealed and “all humanity” will see it. What does it mean that the comfort God gives you personally is part of His larger plan to reveal His goodness to the world?
For today’s practice, take a quiet moment to pray the words, “Prepare Your way in me, Lord.” Imagine your heart as a landscape—its valleys, its mountains, its winding paths. Offer each part to God. Then choose one small act of preparation: perhaps extending forgiveness, releasing a worry, confessing a burden, or expressing gratitude. Let this act become a way of straightening the road for Christ to enter more fully into your life.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for speaking comfort to my heart. Prepare Your way within me and smooth the places that have grown rough or weary. Lift what is low, humble what is high, and shape me by Your grace so that Your glory may be revealed in my life.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
