August 8 — Following Jesus Each Day

Then Jesus said to them all, “If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.”
— Luke 9:23
 
 
Following Jesus is not a single decision. It is a daily way of life. When we first come to Christ, we begin a relationship that changes the direction of our lives. But Jesus reminds us that this relationship is renewed every day through countless small choices. “If anyone would come after Me…” Jesus extends this invitation to everyone. He does not call only the exceptionally gifted, the highly educated, or the spiritually mature. He calls ordinary people who are willing to walk with Him. The invitation remains the same today. Come after Me.
 
Pause and reflect: What does it mean for me to follow Jesus today? Not someday, when life is less busy or circumstances are easier—but today, in the ordinary moments that lie before you. “…he must deny himself…” These words are often misunderstood. Jesus is not calling us to reject our worth or deny our identity. Rather, He is inviting us to set aside the desire to place ourselves at the center of our lives. Self-denial is choosing God’s will over our own whenever the two are in conflict. It is saying, “Lord, Your way before mine.” “…take up his cross daily…” The word daily is important. Following Christ is not sustained by yesterday’s commitment. Each morning presents a fresh invitation to trust, obey, and walk with Him. Sometimes carrying the cross means choosing forgiveness instead of resentment. Sometimes it means serving when it would be easier to withdraw. Sometimes it means speaking truth with love, remaining faithful through hardship, or quietly obeying God when no one else notices. “…and follow Me.” Christianity is ultimately about relationship. Jesus does not simply hand us a list of instructions. He calls us to walk behind Him—to learn from Him, trust Him, and become more like Him.
 
Today, rather than asking only, “What should I do?”, consider asking a different question: “Lord, where are You leading me today?” You might pray, “Jesus, help me to follow You today.” Then look for opportunities to say yes. Yes to kindness. Yes to humility. Yes to forgiveness. Yes to faithfulness. These daily acts may seem ordinary. Yet they are how discipleship is lived. One decision. One conversation. One act of obedience. One day at a time. And as you continue following Jesus, you may discover that He is not simply leading you to a destination. He is shaping you into His likeness along the way.
 
 
Loving Father,
 
Thank You for calling me to follow Jesus. Thank You that each new day is an opportunity to walk more closely with Him.
 
Help me to set aside my own will whenever it conflicts with Yours. Give me the courage to take up my cross each day and to follow faithfully wherever Jesus leads. Shape my heart to become more like His, one day at a time.
 
All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
