Sincere Worship and Great Anticipation

1 The earth is the LORD's, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

2 For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place?

4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

5 He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

6 This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah.

7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.

9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.
--Psalm 24 KJV Bible

This is a psalm of David. It begins with a hymn of praise to God the Owner and Creator of the whole earth. David then instructs prospective worshipers and concludes with an anthem to the King of glory. It has been suggested that David may have composed this psalm when he brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem (2 Samuel chapter 6), or that David possibly composed it on one of the anniversaries of that occasion.

In verses 1 and 2, David states plainly that God owns everything because God made everything.

In verse 4, David explains the qualities for holiness in worship. Worshipers must strive to be sinless in their thoughts and actions. They cannot not worship idols, only the one true God. And they must be honest others just as they are with God.

In verse 6, David is comparing these worshipers--these who wish to seek God's face--to Jacob, whom God renamed Israel. David is referring to Genesis 32:24-30, when Jacob wrestled with God and saw God face to face.

In verses 7 through 10, David's anthem speaks prophetically of the ascension of Christ after His victory over sin and death and of His coming reign as King over all the earth.

Lord, I praise You, for You created everything and it is Yours. Help me to be sincere in my worship of You and honest in my actions with others. With great joy, I look forward to Your coming kingdom.
