Advent: 25 Days to Go
The adventure of Christmas continues. We have learned that Jesus Christ was the “logos”--the Word of God; the revelation of God to humanity. We have also learned that He came into the world to bring the “light” which leads to the “life” of salvation. We now learn about the witness to the “Light”...
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
--John 1:6-13 KJV Bible
The prophets foretold the coming of the Christ. But they were not the only ones. John, called "the Baptizer" or "the Baptist," also announced His coming. John was specifically sent by God. Verse 8 makes clear the role of John. He was to be a witness to the "Light." And John did just that until his last breath. He prepared the way for the Christ.
Jesus, the “Light” came into the world, enlightening everyone and thus requiring them to make a decision. The world did chose not recognize Him as the Christ, the Son of God, the Creator of all, and the Savior of all. Jesus came to His own creation, even to those who awaited His coming, and most didn’t believe in Him. But some did believe. And because they received Him, they also received a new birth--a new life--from God, making them children of God.
Tomorrow, we will learn more of Jesus and John and about the law and grace...
