Parable of the Lost Sheep
Now, all the tax collectors and sinners were coming to listen to Jesus. The Pharisees and scribes saw this and they began to grumble: “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
In response, Jesus then told them all some parables about things that were lost and then found. The first was the parable of the lost sheep, which Jesus had taught His apostles privately while they were in Capernaum. But this time, Jesus told the parable in greater detail to make a point to the Pharisees and scribes. Jesus said, “Who among you, if you have a hundred sheep and lose one of them, will not leave the ninety-nine in the pasture and go after the one that is lost until you find it? And when you find it, you joyfully put the sheep on your shoulders, come home, and call together your friends and neighbors to tell them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost!’ In the same way, I tell you that there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous ones who do not need to repent."
