The First Commandment
The following is part 2 of “Love that Binds”:
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.”
—Matthew 22:37-38
What does it mean to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind? Jesus’ words invite us to a complete, wholehearted devotion that encompasses every part of our being. This commandment, drawn from Deuteronomy 6:5, places love at the very center of our relationship with God. It reminds us that God doesn’t desire a cold, mechanical obedience; He desires our love—authentic, unreserved, and alive.
Loving God is not just a duty; it is a response to the profound truth that He first loved us. From the moment of creation to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, God’s love has pursued us. Our love for Him flows from our recognition of who He is and all He has done for us.
Heart, Soul, and Mind
To love God with all our heart, soul, and mind is to engage every aspect of who we are:
· The Heart: Represents the center of our emotions and desires. Loving God with our heart means aligning our affections with His will and seeking Him as our greatest treasure.
· The Soul: Represents our life and being. Loving God with our soul involves offering our whole selves to Him in worship, trust, and surrender.
· The Mind: Represents our thoughts and understanding. Loving God with our mind calls us to meditate on His Word, pursue truth, and allow our beliefs to shape our actions.
When these three aspects of love are intertwined, they create a life rooted in God’s presence and guided by His Spirit.
An Invitation to Intimacy
This commandment is not a burdensome obligation; it is an invitation to intimacy. God, who created the universe, longs for a personal relationship with each of us. As we draw closer to Him, we begin to experience the fullness of His love, which transforms our hearts and strengthens our faith.
Loving God with all our being requires intentionality. It means prioritizing time with Him, studying His Word, worshiping Him, and surrendering our plans to His purposes. It is through this intentional relationship that we learn to love Him more deeply and completely.
