Love That Does Something

If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need, but has no compassion on him, how can the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us love not in word and speech, but in action and truth.
— 1 John 3:17-18

John writes with clarity and urgency: true love cannot remain still. It must act. It must respond. Love that abides in God’s heart cannot pass by a need without compassion. It refuses to stay silent or distant when a brother or sister is hurting. John does not complicate the issue—he asks one piercing question: Do we have compassion?

This passage ties our willingness to respond directly to the presence of God’s love within us. It does not ask whether someone’s situation is tidy, whether we agree with every choice they’ve made, or whether they fit neatly into our expectations. It asks whether our hearts are moved to mercy. Have you ever been moved to help someone but held back? What might have changed if you had stepped forward?

John calls believers not just to say “I care,” but to show it. “Let us love not in word and speech, but in action and truth.” Loving in truth means embracing the cost: entering into discomfort, sharing what we have, listening when it is easier to walk away. What specific needs around you could be met by your resources, your time, or your simple presence?

For those living on the margins, this call is especially vital. Many are weary of promises that stay words only. They long for love that shows up—love that lingers, love that helps. How can you become more intentional about loving not just in intention, but in deeds of compassion, small and great?

This week, ask God to make your love visible—to transform tender feelings into tangible actions. Every meal shared, every listening ear, every gift given in mercy becomes a reflection of the love that first found you.

God of True Love,

You did not love me from afar but came near, gave generously, and met my deepest needs. Teach me to love like that. Let my compassion move me to action, and let my love reflect Your truth. Show me where to give, how to serve, and when to step forward with mercy. May Your love so abide in me that I cannot help but extend it to others.

I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
