December 19 — John 1:6–9

There came a man who was sent from God. His name was John. He came as a witness to testify about the Light, so that through him everyone might believe. He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

The true Light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
— John 1:6–9

In the opening verses of John’s Gospel, we meet John the Baptist—a man sent by God not to draw attention to himself but to point others to the Light. Advent is a season shaped by this same calling. Even as we wait for Christ’s coming, we are reminded that our role is not to be the source of light but to bear witness to it. John lived with clarity about who he was and who he was not. He knew his purpose: to prepare others to see Jesus clearly. His humility and focus show us that the greatest calling of a believer is not self-promotion but pointing others to the hope found in Christ.

John’s Gospel emphasizes that “the true Light… was coming into the world.” The Light does not originate within us; it shines upon us and through us. This Light is Christ Himself—the One who reveals God, who exposes what is false, and who brings life to what is darkened. Advent invites us to reflect on the kind of Light Jesus brings: clarity where there is confusion, hope where there is despair, and truth where there is uncertainty. It also reminds us that the world is in need of witnesses—people whose lives quietly and courageously testify to the reality of Christ’s presence.

As you meditate on this passage, consider these questions: In what ways has Christ brought light into your life—through guidance, forgiveness, clarity, or renewed hope? How might God be calling you to bear witness to the Light in this season? Are there places where you have felt pressure to “be the light” instead of remembering that you simply reflect Christ’s light? And who in your life needs the gentle encouragement of your testimony—your kindness, your story, or your presence?

For today’s practice, take a moment to sit in a dimly lit space or simply close your eyes and imagine darkness. Then imagine a single light shining—steady, warm, and gentle. Whisper the prayer, “Jesus, be my Light.” As you go through your day, look for one opportunity to point someone toward hope—through a kind word, a prayer, or an act of compassion. Let your life be a quiet testimony to the Light that has come into the world.

Lord God,

Thank You for sending Jesus, the true Light, into the world. Help me reflect His presence in all I do and bear faithful witness to His hope. Free me from striving to be what only Christ can be, and let His light shine through me with gentleness and truth.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
