January 1 — Luke 2:21
On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the Child, He was named Jesus—the name the angel had given Him before He was conceived.
— Luke 2:21
On the first day of a new year, Scripture draws our attention to an intimate and quiet moment in the life of Jesus—His naming. Eight days after His birth, according to Jewish custom, the Child was circumcised and given His name: Jesus, the name spoken from heaven before Mary ever felt His first movement, before Joseph ever dreamed of His coming, before the world knew that God was drawing near. The name Jesus means “The LORD saves,” and with it, the mission of Christ is declared. Advent and Christmas have told the story of His arrival; now His name tells the story of His purpose.
This small moment reminds us that God’s plans unfold with intentionality and tenderness. Nothing is accidental. Jesus enters fully into human customs and family life, bearing a name that proclaims His identity. As the year begins, we are invited to remember that the God who came near in a manger continues to come near in our ordinary moments—our habits, our routines, our beginnings, and our endings. The new year may feel uncertain, yet we are anchored by the One whose name is salvation, hope, and deliverance.
The naming of Jesus also teaches us about identity. Before Jesus performed a miracle, preached a sermon, or called a disciple, He was already named and loved. The same is true for us. Our identity is rooted not in our achievements but in God’s grace. A new year often tempts us toward self-reliance, striving, or the burden of resolutions. But the gospel begins with gift, not effort. With grace, not performance. With God naming us as His own through Christ.
As you reflect on this passage, consider these questions: What does the name Jesus—The LORD saves—mean in your life today? Where do you need His saving presence in the year ahead? How does remembering your identity as God’s beloved child shape your hopes, goals, or uncertainties for this new season? And what new year burdens might you release into the hands of the One who came to save?
For today’s practice, whisper the name “Jesus” slowly and prayerfully several times. Let it settle into your heart as both a prayer and a declaration. If you feel led, write down one hope or need for the new year and place it symbolically before the Lord. Begin this year not with striving, but with surrender—trusting that the One whose name is salvation walks into this year with you.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of a new year and for the name that is above every name—Jesus. As I enter this season, help me trust in His saving presence and rest in my identity as Your beloved child. Guide my steps, calm my worries, and shape my days according to Your grace.
In the strong name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
