December 30 — Hebrews 1:1–3
In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways. But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
— Hebrews 1:1–3
As the year draws toward its close, Hebrews offers us a sweeping view of Christ—one that lifts our eyes from the manger to the full majesty of who Jesus is. God has always spoken: through prophets, visions, and signs. But now, the writer tells us, God has spoken in the clearest, fullest way possible—through His Son. Christmas reminds us that Jesus is not merely a messenger but the message, not merely a sign but the radiance of God’s glory. To see Jesus is to see the heart of God revealed in human form.
The passage unfolds a breathtaking description of Jesus: He is heir of all things, Creator of the universe, the exact representation of God’s nature, the One who sustains all things by His powerful word. Yet this same Jesus entered our world in humility, offering Himself for our purification, and now reigns in glory. Advent and Christmas hold these two realities together: the tender Child in Bethlehem is also the eternal Son who sits at the Father’s right hand. The One who lay in a manger now upholds the cosmos. The One who cried in Mary’s arms is the One who speaks galaxies into being.
As you reflect on this passage, consider these questions: How does seeing Jesus in His full majesty deepen your understanding of Christmas? What does it mean to you that God has spoken personally and finally through His Son? Where do you need to remember today that Christ upholds all things—including your life—by His powerful word? And how might this vision of Jesus shape the way you approach the coming new year?
For today’s practice, spend a few minutes in quiet awe. Whisper Jesus’ name and meditate on one phrase from this passage—perhaps “radiance of God’s glory” or “upholding all things”. Let it draw your heart into worship. If you’re able, write a short prayer or poem of praise describing one aspect of Christ that fills you with wonder today.
Almighty God,
Thank You for speaking to us through Your Son, the radiance of Your glory and the exact representation of Your nature. Lord Jesus, I worship You—Creator, Sustainer, Redeemer, and King. Help me trust in Your power, rest in Your presence, and walk into the new year with confidence in Your love.
In the strong name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
