Study of Ruth 3:6-13

So she went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law had instructed her to do.

After Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went to lie down at the far end of the grain pile. Then Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.

In the middle of the night, Boaz was startled and turned over. There, lying at his feet, was a woman!

“Who are you?” he asked.

“I am your servant Ruth,” she replied. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, for you are a kinsman-redeemer.”

Then Boaz said, “May the Lord bless you, my daughter. You have shown more kindness now than before, because you have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor. And now do not be afraid, my daughter. I will do for you whatever you request, since all my fellow townspeople know that you are a woman of noble character.

“Yes, it is true that I am a kinsman-redeemer, but there is a redeemer nearer than I. Stay here for the night, and in the morning, if he wants to redeem you, good. Let him redeem you. But if he does not want to redeem you, as surely as the Lord lives, I will. Lie here until morning.”
— Ruth 3:6-13

In this dramatic scene, Ruth follows Naomi’s instructions and approaches Boaz in a humble yet bold way. By asking Boaz to spread the corner of his garment over her, Ruth is not only seeking protection but also invoking the symbolic act of marriage and asking him to fulfill his role as a kinsman-redeemer.

Boaz’s response reveals his admiration for Ruth’s character and his commitment to doing what is right. He blesses Ruth, reassures her, and expresses his willingness to redeem her if the closer kinsman does not. Boaz’s integrity and care shine in this moment, as he prioritizes honoring God’s law and ensuring Ruth’s future.

This passage demonstrates the power of humility, bold faith, and integrity. It reminds us that God works through relationships and actions rooted in faithfulness, trust, and love.

2. Boaz acted with integrity and kindness, ensuring that Ruth’s situation would be handled properly. How can we reflect these qualities in our relationships with others?

3. How does the concept of a kinsman-redeemer point us to Jesus as our ultimate Redeemer?

Prayer

Loving Father,

In Ruth’s boldness and Boaz’s integrity, we see how faith and righteousness come together to fulfill Your plans. Teach us to trust in You as our ultimate Redeemer and to approach You with humility and faith. Help us to live with kindness and integrity in our interactions with others, reflecting Your love and care. Thank You for working through the faithfulness of ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes.

It is in Jesus’ name that I pray. Amen.
