Study of Ruth 2:14-16

At mealtime, Boaz said to her, “Come over here, have some bread, and dip it into the vinegar sauce.” So she sat down beside the harvesters, and he offered her roasted grain, and she ate and was satisfied, and she had some left over.

When she got up to glean, Boaz instructed his young men, “Let her gather grain even among the bundles, and do not humiliate her. Rather, pull out for her some stalks from the bundles and leave them for her to gather. Do not rebuke her.”
— Ruth 2:14-16

In this passage, Boaz goes beyond what is required by the law of gleaning. He not only allows Ruth to glean in his field but also invites her to share a meal, treating her with honor and dignity as an equal among his workers. By offering her food and ensuring she has enough to eat, Boaz shows an extraordinary level of care and kindness.

Boaz also provides special instructions to his workers, allowing Ruth to gather grain more easily and without fear of humiliation or rebuke. These acts of generosity highlight Boaz’s character and his willingness to go above and beyond in caring for Ruth.

For us, this passage demonstrates how small acts of kindness and generosity can profoundly impact others. It reminds us of the importance of treating everyone with dignity, regardless of their background or circumstances. Boaz’s actions point to God’s abundant provision and His call for us to share that abundance with others.

Questions

1. Boaz provided for Ruth in ways that went beyond basic expectations. How can we practice generosity that exceeds what is expected of us?

2. Boaz treated Ruth with dignity and respect, even though she was a foreigner and a gleaner. How can we ensure we treat others with the same kindness and honor?

3. Have you experienced a time when someone showed you unexpected kindness? How did it affect you, and how can you extend that same kindness to others?

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Through Boaz’s kindness to Ruth, we see Your heart of compassion and generosity. Teach us to care for others with the same willingness to go above and beyond, showing dignity and respect to everyone, no matter their circumstances. May our lives reflect Your abundant provision as we share what we have with those in need. Open our hearts to opportunities to bless others with unexpected kindness, just as Boaz blessed Ruth.

I pray in the name of Jesus, Your Son. Amen.
