A Gift That God Remembers

Kindness to the poor is a loan to the LORD, and He will repay the lender.
— Proverbs 19:17

This short verse carries a profound and beautiful truth: every act of kindness toward the poor is seen, valued, and remembered by God. Mercy given to those in need is not simply charity—it is a gift offered directly to the Lord Himself. When we extend compassion, we are lending to God, participating in a sacred exchange that is not governed by earthly wealth but by heavenly faithfulness.

What a remarkable reversal: the one who gives becomes the lender, and the Almighty, in all His glory, promises to repay. This repayment may not come through financial blessing or worldly reward. It may be a deepening of joy, an increase in compassion, or a stronger sense of purpose. Yet the promise stands firm—God will not forget even the smallest gift given in love. How might viewing your acts of kindness as “a loan to the LORD” change the way you give or serve others? Would it create a deeper joy, a greater freedom in generosity?

Reflect on the moments when you showed mercy to someone in need. In what ways has God already “repaid” you—perhaps not with material wealth, but with the richer blessings of peace, fulfillment, or closer fellowship with Him? And where might you be hearing an invitation even now to give more freely, trusting that the outcome is safe in God’s hands?

This week, open your heart to opportunities for kindness that might at first seem small or unnoticed. Let each act be a prayer, an offering, a silent loan to the Lord who delights to repay in ways we cannot measure. In giving to others, you are participating in the mercy and generosity of God Himself.

Generous God,

You see every act of love and every gift of compassion. Thank You for the promise that nothing given in Your name is ever lost. Help me to give not for recognition, but as an act of trust and worship. Let my heart grow more open, my hands more willing, and my spirit more joyful in serving the poor. May I always remember that in giving to others, I am giving to You.

I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
