Study of Ruth 3:1-5

One day Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, should I not seek a resting place for you, that it may be well with you? Now is not Boaz, with whose servant girls you have been working, a relative of ours? In fact, he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor tonight.

“Wash and perfume yourself, and put on your cloak. Then go down to the threshing floor, but do not let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, note the place where he lies. Then go in and uncover his feet and lie down, and he will explain to you what you should do.”

“I will do everything you say,” Ruth answered.
— Ruth 3:1-5

This passage begins Naomi’s plan for Ruth to seek security and a future by approaching Boaz as a potential kinsman-redeemer. Naomi’s words show her care for Ruth’s well-being, and her suggestion reflects the customs of the time. By uncovering Boaz’s feet and lying down, Ruth signals her willingness to place herself under his care and protection.

Ruth’s response demonstrates her trust in Naomi and her willingness to act boldly, even in an unfamiliar cultural practice. This moment is a turning point in the story, as Ruth steps forward in faith to take part in God’s unfolding plan for her and Naomi’s redemption.

For us today, this passage highlights the importance of faith, trust, and bold action in seeking God’s provision. It reminds us that God often works through our willingness to step out of our comfort zones, trusting Him to guide us.

Questions

1. Naomi sought security for Ruth by encouraging her to approach Boaz. How can we help others find safety, security, and hope in their lives?

2. Ruth acted with faith and boldness. Have you ever had to step out in faith, trusting God with an uncertain outcome? What did you learn from that experience?

3. How can this passage encourage us to trust God’s timing and plans, even when they require bold or unfamiliar actions?

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Through Naomi and Ruth, we see how trust and boldness can lead to Your provision and care. Help us to seek Your guidance in all that we do and to step forward in faith, even when the way is uncertain. Teach us to be bold in love, faith, and action, trusting that You are working for our good. May we also support and encourage others to find security and hope in You.

All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
