Sacrificial Love

By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no compassion for him, how can the love of God abide in him?

Little children, let us love not in word and speech, but in action and truth.
– 1 John 3:16-18

John takes the concept of love and gives it flesh and form—Jesus laid down His life for us. That is the standard. Not mere sentiment or surface-level kindness, but deep, sacrificial love that moves from feeling to action.

Real love shows up. It gives. It sacrifices. And it especially moves toward those in need—whether the need is physical, emotional, relational, or spiritual. Love that abides in God cannot help but respond when it sees a brother or sister in distress.

For those of us seeking to grow in love and tolerance within the church, this passage is a call to examine not just our beliefs, but our behavior. Are we willing to lay down our comfort, our pride, our assumptions for the sake of another? Are we willing to serve, to share, to listen, and to act even when we don’t fully agree?

Love in action isn’t always grand or dramatic. Often, it’s a simple gesture of compassion—a listening ear, a shared burden, an unexpected kindness. And in these small, faithful acts, God’s love becomes visible in us.

Questions

1. What does it mean for you to lay down your life for a fellow believer today?

2. Have you ever claimed love in words but withheld it in action?

3. Who in your life needs to see the love of Christ through your actions?

Suggested Activity

Find a tangible way to show love in action today. Meet a need. Offer your time. Give encouragement. Do something that reflects the sacrificial love of Jesus for a fellow believer—not because it’s easy, but because it’s true.

Prayer

Jesus,

You showed me what love looks like when You laid down Your life. Help me to love like that—not just in theory, but in practice. Show me who needs compassion today, and give me the courage to respond. Let my love be more than words—let it be real, active, and rooted in truth.

In Your name I pray. Amen.
