Seek Peace, Respond with Kindness

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: ‘Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.’ On the contrary, ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. For in so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
– Romans 12:17-21

Paul’s instructions here reflect the heart of Jesus’ teachings: we are not called to return offense for offense, or harm for harm. Instead, we are called to actively seek peace, to trust God with justice, and to respond to hostility with kindness.

Living this way requires both humility and courage. It’s not easy to choose restraint when we feel wronged. It’s not natural to serve someone who has hurt us or to speak kindly when we've been misunderstood or misrepresented. Yet Paul insists that this is the way of Christ—and the way to overcome evil.

We are not helpless in the face of division or disagreement. We are given the powerful tool of goodness. When we bless instead of retaliate, when we serve instead of attack, when we forgive instead of plot revenge, we disarm the cycle of harm and make space for grace to enter. This kind of goodness doesn't mean tolerating injustice—it means refusing to fight darkness with more darkness.

Questions

1. When have you been tempted to “repay evil for evil,” even in subtle ways like sarcasm or silence?

2. What does it mean for you to “live at peace with everyone” in your current relationships?

3. How can you practice overcoming evil with good in your life today?

Suggested Activity

Think of a recent conflict or misunderstanding—especially with someone in the Christian community. Ask God to show you one act of good you can offer in response. This could be a message of kindness, an apology, or a generous gesture. Choose goodness over resentment.

Prayer

God of peace,

You overcame evil not with force, but with love. Teach me to do the same. When I’m tempted to lash out, help me to pause. When I’m hurt, help me to choose grace. Give me the strength to overcome evil with good, trusting that You are the righteous Judge. May my life reflect the mercy You’ve shown me.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
