Beatitudes
Jesus went up a short distance on the mountain slope and sat down to teach the people. He began, saying:
“Blessed are you who are poor in spirit. Yours is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you who mourn and weep. You will be comforted and you will laugh.
“Blessed are you who are meek. You will inherit the earth.
“Blessed are you who hunger and thirst for righteousness. You will be filled.
“Blessed are you who are merciful. You will be shown mercy.
“Blessed are you who are pure in heart. You will see God.
“Blessed are you who are peacemakers. You will be called children of God.
“Blessed are you who are persecuted because of righteousness. Yours is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people hate you, insult you, persecute you, exclude you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me, the Son of Man. When that happens, rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven; for, in the same way, they persecuted the prophets before you."
(See Matthew 5:1-12; Luke 6:20-23)
(Editor's Note: A beatitude is defined as a state of utmost bliss. Also, any of the blessings said by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.)
