Synagogue in Capernaum

Jesus and His disciples were in Capernaum of Galilee. On the Sabbath, Jesus entered the synagogue and He began to teach the people. And they were astonished at His teaching because He taught as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.

Also in the synagogue was a man who was possessed by an unclean demon. He cried out in a loud voice, “Ha! What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

But Jesus rebuked the demon. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!”

At this, the demon threw the man into convulsions and he fell down on the ground before all the people. Then the demon came out of the man with a loud shriek, but without harming him.

All the people were overcome with amazement and asked one another, “What is this message? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey Him!" And the news about Jesus spread quickly through the whole region of Galilee.
