Twelfth Year

Every year, Mary and Joseph traveled from Nazareth to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. And when Jesus turned twelve years old, He went with them, according to the custom of the Feast.

The Passover to the Lord God began at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month of the year. On the fifteenth day began the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the Lord God. For seven days the people ate unleavened bread. On the first of these days, on which they did no work, the people held a sacred assembly. And for seven days the people presented to the Lord God offerings made by fire. On the seventh day, on which the people did no work, they held another sacred assembly.

When the Feast was ended, Mary and Joseph began the journey back home with their relatives and friends. The Boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. But His parents were not aware that Jesus stayed behind. Although they did not see Jesus before they left Jerusalem, they assumed He was traveling with them, somewhere in their company of relatives and friends.
