Dance with Joy Again
“Again I will build you, and you will be rebuilt,
O Virgin Israel.
Again you will take up your tambourines
and go out in joyful dancing.”
— Jeremiah 31:4
This promise comes from a prophet who knew sorrow intimately. Jeremiah, often called the “weeping prophet,” spoke to a people in exile, broken by loss and longing. And yet, in the midst of warning and lament, he was also given words of hope—words that promised return, rebuilding, and renewal. In this verse, God assures His people that joy will come again. The tambourines that once fell silent will be picked up. The dancing that once stopped will begin anew. And the people will move together in praise, not out of obligation, but out of overflowing joy.
There is deep comfort here. It reminds us that music and movement are not just acts of praise in the moment—they are also signs of healing. To dance again after sorrow is to say that grief has not had the final word. To take up the tambourine again is to acknowledge that God has been faithful, even through the hardest chapters. Joyful worship, in this sense, becomes a testimony of recovery and renewal. It is a visible sign of God restoring what was lost.
You might reflect on whether your tambourine has been hung on a wall for too long, whether literal or figurative. Has the dance of your heart been stilled by sorrow, fatigue, or discouragement? Do you believe the time will come when joy will return—not only in quiet peace, but in celebration? Can you hear God’s invitation to take up joy again, to let music mark a new beginning?
Today, if you feel led, pick up something that makes rhythm—a tambourine, a drum, your hands clapping in time—and let yourself move, even slightly, to the beat of praise. Dance if you can, or sway, or walk with intention. Play a song that brings a smile or stirs a memory of hope. Let your body and spirit agree with the promise: that God restores, that He renews, and that you will rejoice again. The tambourine is waiting.
Faithful and Restoring God,
Thank You for the promise that joy will come again. When sorrow has silenced my song and stilled my steps, You remain at work, rebuilding what was broken and renewing what was lost. Teach me to trust in Your timing and to believe that the day will come when my heart will dance again. Help me to pick up the tambourine of praise, even now, and to let hope stir within me. May my worship become a visible sign of Your goodness and a testimony to Your healing love.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
