The Song of Moses
Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD:
“I will sing to the LORD,
for He is highly exalted.
The horse and rider
He has thrown into the sea.
The LORD is my strength and my song,
and He has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise Him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt Him.
— Exodus 15:1-2
Music arises naturally in moments of deliverance. After the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea, Moses and the Israelites did not simply offer a spoken prayer of thanks—they sang. Their song was a response born out of awe, fear turned to joy, and the realization that they had just witnessed the mighty hand of God. The lyrics declare who God is—strength, song, salvation—and place that truth firmly within the story of their lives and their ancestors’ faith. In this moment, music becomes a testimony.
Singing to God is often the most fitting response when words alone feel inadequate. It gathers up memory, emotion, and conviction and shapes them into melody. Moses didn’t just narrate the events; he proclaimed God’s triumph in song. For musicians and worshipers today, this moment reminds us that music is not only an offering of beauty but a declaration of who God is and what He has done.
You might consider the last time you felt truly delivered—perhaps not through parted seas, but through the lifting of a burden, the healing of a wound, or the arrival of peace after fear. Did your heart instinctively want to sing? And if so, what did your song say about who God is to you? Can you identify Him as your strength, your song, your salvation? Or are you still standing at the shore, waiting for the courage to lift your voice?
Today, take time to reflect on a moment of rescue in your life, whether large or small. Let it become a reason for praise. If you’re able, sing aloud a simple melody of thanksgiving, even if it’s just a phrase or two. If you prefer, play an instrumental piece that speaks to your own journey through difficulty to deliverance. You may even choose to write your own short verse, echoing the structure of Moses’ declaration: “The LORD is my ___, and He has become my ___.” However you choose to respond, let your music rise not only from your skill but from the memory of God’s saving power.
Mighty God,
You are my strength, my song, and my salvation. Just as You delivered Moses and the Israelites from the waters and filled their hearts with music, so too have You rescued me time and again from the trials that threatened to overwhelm me. I praise You for the moments when fear gave way to faith, when sorrow was lifted, and when joy broke forth like a new dawn. Teach me to remember Your deliverance and to let my gratitude overflow in song. Even when words fail, help my heart to sing of who You are and what You have done. May my music always proclaim Your greatness and invite others to see Your saving power.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
