Rejoicing Before the Ark

“David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the LORD with all kinds of wood instruments—harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums, and cymbals.”
— 2 Samuel 6:5

The return of the Ark of the Covenant was no ordinary procession. It was a celebration of God’s presence returning to the heart of His people. David, along with the entire house of Israel, expressed their joy through music—a symphony of worship composed of harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums (played by shaking, like rattles), and cymbals. The scene is one of exuberance, of holy abandon, of a people unafraid to express joy in the fullest range of sound. This is not restrained worship—it is wholehearted rejoicing.

David’s example challenges many of our assumptions about what worship looks like. He did not simply nod in reverence or remain still in pious silence. He danced. He played. He led a musical offering that was physical, communal, and unashamed. Music in worship, as modeled here, is not always solemn or quiet. Sometimes it is vibrant, rhythmic, and overflowing with emotion, declaring to God and to others, “You are worthy of celebration.”

You might consider whether you allow yourself to rejoice freely in God’s presence through music. Do you feel freedom in worship to express joy with your voice or body? Or do you find yourself hesitating, worrying about appearances or decorum? What might it look like to offer God your praise in a way that matches the full gladness of your heart? And when others worship with joy, are you drawn in—or do you hold back?

Today, take a moment to engage with music that lifts your heart in celebration. Choose a song that expresses joy and play it loudly if you’re able. Sing or dance as David did—without shame, without holding back. If dancing feels too bold, perhaps a smile or lifted hands is your offering. The point is not performance but sincerity. Let your whole being respond to the goodness of God, and in doing so, rejoice as one who knows the presence of the Lord is near.

Joyful and Worthy God,

You fill my heart with gladness and give me every reason to rejoice in Your presence. Thank You for the example of David, who celebrated You with music, dance, and unrestrained joy. Free me from fear and self-consciousness in my worship. Help me to offer You my whole heart—my voice, my hands, my movement—as a sincere expression of praise. May my music and rejoicing not only honor You but also invite others to see Your goodness and join in the celebration. Teach me to worship You with all that I am, for You are worthy of all my joy.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
