Let Everything That Has Breath
Hallelujah!
Praise God in His sanctuary.
Praise Him in His mighty heavens.
Praise Him for His mighty acts;
praise Him for His excellent greatness.
Praise Him with the sound of the horn;
praise Him with the harp and lyre.
Praise Him with tambourine and dancing;
praise Him with strings and flute.
Praise Him with clashing cymbals;
praise Him with resounding cymbals.
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD!
Hallelujah!
— Psalm 150:1-6
The final psalm is not quiet. It does not close the book with a whisper but with a call that echoes through the heavens and across the earth: Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. This is the culmination of all the songs that came before it—the laments, the rejoicings, the cries, and the declarations. Every voice and every instrument is summoned into this symphony. Trumpets, harps, lyres, strings, flutes, cymbals, and dancing bodies—all are welcomed in the final burst of praise.
Here, music is not a solitary act. It is communal, cosmic, and all-encompassing. The sanctuary and the heavens are united in worship. The worshipper does not praise God only for what He has done, but also for who He is—His mighty acts and His excellent greatness. This psalm makes it clear: praise is not optional. It is the natural response of everything that breathes, and it rises in forms as varied as creation itself.
You might ask yourself, what sound does your breath make in praise today? What instrument—literal or metaphorical—are you bringing into this grand conclusion? Have you been holding back in your worship, waiting for a more appropriate time, a better season, a more prepared heart? Psalm 150 reminds us that if we have breath, we have reason to praise. Worship is not reserved for the skilled or the joyful—it is the calling of the living.
Today, take this psalm as both a commission and a celebration. Make music with whatever is in your hands—your voice, your instrument, your movement, your gratitude. If you feel joy, let it overflow. If you feel sorrow, let praise lift your head. Look around and see that all of creation is invited to this song. Join it with gladness. Let your breath be a part of the sound that rises to the One who is always worthy. Hallelujah!
Hallelujah, Lord of all creation!
You are worthy of every sound, every note, every breath of praise. Thank You for giving me life and breath, and for inviting me to join the great song of worship that fills the heavens and the earth. Help me not to hold back my praise—whether through voice, instrument, movement, or quiet gratitude. Let every breath I take today remind me of Your excellent greatness and mighty acts. Make my life itself a song to You, joining with all that has breath to glorify Your name. Hallelujah!
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
