Awake My Soul

My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast.
I will sing and make music.
Awake, my glory!
Awake, O harp and lyre!
I will awaken the dawn.

I will praise You, O Lord, among the nations;
I will sing Your praises among the peoples.
— Psalm 57:7-9

In this psalm, David writes from a place of danger—he is hiding in a cave, fleeing from Saul—yet his heart remains resolute in praise. Twice he declares, “My heart is steadfast,” as though repeating it seals the truth in his spirit. From that place of inward strength, he calls upon his own soul and his instruments to wake up. “Awake, O harp and lyre!” This is not the sleepy worship of habit—it is worship that stirs itself to life. David is not waiting for the morning to bring him hope; instead, he says, “I will awaken the dawn.” His praise will rise before the sun does.

There is something bold and beautiful in this kind of worship. It defies circumstances. It reaches beyond the shadows. It declares that the One who is worthy of praise is still worthy, even in caves, even in fear, even in waiting. Music becomes an act of spiritual awakening—a call to rise, to remember, to rejoice before the light comes. David does not sing because all is well; he sings because he knows the One who holds the morning.

You may find yourself needing to awaken something within your spirit. Perhaps fear or weariness has dulled your voice. Perhaps the strings of your instrument have been silent too long. Have you ever asked your soul to wake up and praise again? What might happen if you decided to sing—not because your problems were solved, but because your heart belongs to God and He is faithful through every season? And who might be drawn to God by hearing that kind of steadfast, early praise?

This morning—or the next one—consider beginning your day with music, even before your mind fully settles. Let your first offering be a song, a few notes played quietly, or a hymn whispered into the stillness. Use your music to “awaken the dawn,” not just around you, but within you. Let your praise precede the light, as David’s did, and trust that God will meet you there—with mercy, strength, and steadfast love.

Faithful God,

You are the One who holds the morning and fills it with new mercies. Thank You for giving me a reason to sing, even when the night feels long and my heart feels heavy. Awaken my soul, Lord. Stir my spirit to praise You before the dawn, to declare Your goodness even in the shadows. Help me to remember that You are worthy of worship not because my circumstances are perfect, but because You are unchanging and full of love. Let my song rise to meet the morning, and may it awaken others to Your presence as well.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
