July 8 — Walking by the Spirit
So I say, walk by the
Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
There is a tension
within the human heart. We often find ourselves pulled in different
directions—toward what is right and life-giving, and toward what is easier or
more self-focused. This inner struggle can feel discouraging at times, as
though we are constantly trying to overcome something within us. Paul offers a
different focus. “Walk by the Spirit…” Rather than concentrating only on
resisting what is wrong, we are invited to walk in a new direction—to
align our lives with the Spirit of God. The emphasis is not simply on
avoidance, but on movement. It is a daily, ongoing choice to follow where the
Spirit leads.
Pause and reflect: What
direction am I currently walking in? Are your thoughts, choices, and habits
drawing you closer to God, or pulling you away? Where might you sense an
invitation to walk differently today? “…and you will not gratify the desires of
the flesh.” This is not a promise of instant perfection, but a shift in focus.
As we walk by the Spirit, our desires begin to change. What once felt strong
begins to lose its hold, not because we have fought harder, but because we are
walking in a different direction.
Today, consider one way
you can intentionally walk by the Spirit. It may be pausing before reacting,
choosing kindness instead of frustration, or turning your attention toward God
in a moment of distraction. You might pray, “Spirit of God, guide my steps
today.” Walking by the Spirit is not dramatic. It is often quiet and
steady. A series of small decisions—made with awareness, shaped by trust, and
guided by God’s presence. And over time, these steps begin to form a path. A
life that is not driven by impulse, but led by the Spirit.
Heavenly Father,

Thank You for giving me Your Spirit to guide and lead me. You know the tension I feel and the areas where I struggle.
