July 18 — Serving with Humility
Do nothing out of
selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important
than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but
also to the interests of others.
It is natural to think
about our own needs. We carry responsibilities, concerns, and goals that
require attention. But Paul gently widens our perspective, inviting us into a
way of living that does not end with ourselves. “Do nothing out of selfish
ambition or empty pride…” These words call us to examine what motivates us. Why
do we act, speak, or respond the way we do? Are we seeking recognition,
control, or advantage? Or are we willing to let our actions be shaped by
something deeper?
Pause and reflect: What
motivates my actions right now? In your daily life, are your choices
primarily centered on your own needs, or do they reflect an awareness of
others? “…in humility consider others more important than yourselves.” This is
not about diminishing your value. It is about reordering your focus. Humility
allows us to see others clearly—to recognize their needs, their dignity, and
their place in God’s care. “Look not only to your own interests…” Your needs
matter, but they are not the only ones that matter. A life shaped by Christ
holds both—caring for what is necessary while remaining attentive to others. “…but
also to the interests of others.” This is where love becomes practical. It
shows up in listening, in serving, in making space for others to be seen and
valued. These acts are often simple, but they carry meaning.
Today, consider one way
to serve someone intentionally. It may be offering help, giving your full
attention, or choosing to put someone else’s need ahead of your own. You might
pray, “Lord, help me to serve with humility.” You do not need to do
everything. But you can take one step. And in that step, your life begins to
reflect the humility of Christ—quiet, steady, and deeply attentive to others.
Heavenly Father,
—
Philippians 2:3-4
Thank You for the example of humility shown in Christ. You know how easily my focus turns inward.
Help me to consider others with care and to serve with sincerity. Give me a heart that is attentive, willing, and shaped by Your love. Guide my actions so that they reflect Your humility.
I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
