July 11 — Remaining in Christ

“Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.”

— John 15:4-5

Much of life encourages us to produce, achieve, and accomplish. We are taught to rely on effort, to measure progress, and to strive toward visible results. But Jesus offers a different picture of how true growth happens. “Remain in Me…” This is the foundation. Before fruit, before action, before outward change—there is relationship. To remain is to stay connected, to abide, to live in ongoing awareness of Christ’s presence.

Pause and reflect: Am I trying to produce fruit on my own, or am I remaining connected to Christ? Are you relying on your own effort to create change, or are you allowing that change to flow from your relationship with Him? “…just as no branch can bear fruit by itself…” A branch does not struggle to produce fruit independently. Its role is to remain connected to the vine. From that connection, nourishment flows, and fruit develops naturally. In the same way, spiritual fruit is not something we force—it is something that grows as we remain in Christ. “I am the vine; you are the branches.” This is both a reminder and an invitation. Your role is not to become the source, but to stay connected to the Source. “…apart from Me you can do nothing.” This is not a statement of limitation meant to discourage, but one meant to clarify. True, lasting fruit—what matters most—comes from connection with Christ.

Today, consider what it means to remain. It may be as simple as returning your attention to God throughout the day. Pausing in the midst of activity. A quiet prayer: “Lord, I remain in You.” You do not need to strive to produce. You are invited to remain. And as you do, fruit will come—not by force, but by connection.

Loving Father,

Thank You for inviting me to remain in Christ. You know how often I try to rely on my own effort and strength.

Teach me to stay connected to You throughout my day. Help me to rest in Your presence and to trust that You will produce fruit in my life. Keep me close to You in all that I do.

All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
