August 17 — Looking to the Lord for Help

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
— Psalm 121:1-2

There are moments when we become keenly aware of our need for help. Some challenges are simply too large for us to carry alone. We may exhaust our own wisdom, strength, or resources and still find ourselves searching for direction. It is often in these moments that we rediscover one of the simplest and most profound truths of faith: Our help comes from the Lord. “I lift up my eyes to the hills…” For the ancient Israelites, the hills could represent both uncertainty and hope. Travelers often looked toward the mountains ahead, knowing the journey could be difficult. At the same time, Jerusalem—the city of God's temple—stood among the hills, reminding God's people of His presence. The psalmist begins by looking beyond what is immediately in front of him.

Pause and reflect: Where do I instinctively look for help when life becomes difficult? Do you first turn inward, relying solely on your own strength? Do you become overwhelmed by the size of the challenge? Or do you remember to lift your eyes toward God? “From where does my help come?” This is an honest question. There are times when we all wonder how we will make it through a difficult season. The question itself is not a sign of weak faith. It is an invitation to remember where our true source of help is found. “My help comes from the LORD…” The answer is immediate and confident. Notice that the psalmist does not merely say that help comes from God. He says it comes from the LORD—the covenant God who knows His people personally and remains faithful to His promises. God's help is not distant. It is personal. It is present. It is dependable. “…the Maker of heaven and earth.” The psalmist reminds himself of God's greatness. The One who created the heavens and the earth is certainly able to help His children. Nothing that concerns you is beyond His wisdom. Nothing that burdens you is greater than His power.

Today, whatever challenge you are facing, begin by lifting your eyes. Before you become consumed by the problem, remember the One who stands above it. You might quietly pray, "Lord, You are my help today." Then move forward with confidence. Not because you possess all the answers. Not because every obstacle has disappeared. But because the Creator of heaven and earth walks beside you. The God who formed the mountains also knows your name. The One who set the stars in place also holds your life securely. And the help you need is never farther away than His presence.

Loving Father,

Thank You for being my constant source of help. When I feel overwhelmed or uncertain, lift my eyes beyond my circumstances and remind me of Your greatness and Your faithfulness.

Help me to depend upon You instead of relying only on my own strength. Give me confidence that the One who created heaven and earth is fully able to sustain me through every challenge. Thank You for always being near and for faithfully helping those who trust in You.

All this I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
