August 18 — Drawing Near with Confidence

“Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
— Hebrews 4:16

There are times when we hesitate to come before God. We may feel unworthy because of our failures. We may wonder whether our prayers are important enough or whether we have disappointed Him too many times. Sometimes we simply do not know what to say. Yet this verse offers one of the most remarkable invitations in all of Scripture. “Let us then approach…” God does not ask us to remain at a distance. He invites us to come near. Because of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the barrier between God and humanity has been removed. We are welcomed into His presence—not as strangers hoping to be noticed, but as beloved children invited into the presence of their Father.

Pause and reflect: How do I approach God? Do you come with confidence in His grace, or do you find yourself holding back because of fear, guilt, or uncertainty? What would change if you truly believed that God delights in welcoming you into His presence? “…the throne of grace…” A throne speaks of authority, majesty, and power. Yet the writer of Hebrews describes God's throne with an unexpected word: Grace. The One who reigns over all creation welcomes us not with condemnation, but with grace. His authority is joined with His mercy. His holiness is joined with His compassion. His power is exercised through His perfect love. “…with confidence…” This confidence is not confidence in ourselves. It is confidence in Christ. We do not approach God because we have earned the right. We approach because Jesus has opened the way. Our assurance rests not in our performance, but in His finished work. “…so that we may receive mercy…” Mercy meets us in our failures. When we confess our sins, God does not turn us away. He forgives. He restores. He welcomes us again. “…and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Grace is not only God's forgiveness for yesterday. It is His strength for today. Whatever your need may be—wisdom, courage, patience, comfort, endurance, or peace—you will find that God's grace is sufficient.

Today, rather than carrying your needs alone, bring them confidently before your Heavenly Father. You might quietly pray, "Father, I come to You because of Jesus. Thank You for welcoming me." Then remain for a few moments in His presence. You do not need impressive words. You do not need perfect faith. You simply need to come. For every time you approach the throne of grace, you discover again what has always been true: God is ready to receive you. His mercy is greater than your failures. His grace is greater than your need. And His loving arms remain open to all who draw near to Him.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for inviting me into Your presence through Jesus Christ. Thank You that Your throne is a throne of grace, where mercy is freely given and help is always available.

Help me to come before You with confidence—not because of my own goodness, but because of Christ's perfect love and sacrifice. Teach me to bring every need, every fear, and every joy into Your presence. May I never forget that You delight in receiving Your children and that Your grace is always sufficient for every moment of my life.

I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
