August 4 — Like a Tree Planted by the Water

But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.
— Jeremiah 17:7-8
 
 
Every person places trust somewhere. In the days of the psalmist, chariots and horses represented military strength. They were symbols of power, security, and the ability to overcome one’s enemies. It was natural to believe that the strongest army would surely prevail. Yet the psalmist points to a greater source of confidence. “Some trust in chariots and others in horses…” The objects of our trust may be different today, but the temptation remains the same. We may trust in financial security. In education or experience. In influence or reputation. In careful planning. In our own abilities to solve every problem. None of these things are wrong in themselves. They are often gifts from God. But they were never meant to become the foundation of our confidence.
 
Pause and reflect: Where do I instinctively place my trust? When uncertainty comes, what do you depend upon first? What gives you a sense of security? Is your deepest confidence rooted in God, or in something that could one day be taken away? “But we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” To trust in God’s name is to trust in His character. His faithfulness. His wisdom. His power. His love. His unchanging nature. Everything else in life may shift. Economies rise and fall. Health changes. Plans are interrupted. Relationships experience challenges. But God remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. This does not mean we ignore practical responsibilities. We still plan wisely, work diligently, and use the resources God has entrusted to us. The difference is found in where our ultimate confidence rests.
 
Today, take a moment to consider what has been occupying your heart. If you discover that your trust has gradually shifted toward something temporary, gently return it to God. You might pray, “Lord, You alone are my confidence.” As you do, remember that trusting God does not eliminate uncertainty.
It gives you a secure foundation within it. For when everything else seems uncertain, the Lord remains faithful. And the One in whom you place your trust will never fail you.
 
 
Heavenly Father,
 
Thank You for being worthy of my complete trust. Forgive me for the times I place my confidence in things that cannot ultimately sustain me.
 
Help me to use wisely the gifts You have given while keeping my deepest trust in You alone. Remind me that Your character never changes and that Your faithfulness endures forever. Teach me to rest confidently in You each day.
 
I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
