August 3 — God Directs Our Steps

A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.
— Proverbs 16:9
 
 
Planning is part of living wisely. We make schedules, set goals, prepare for the future, and consider the direction we hope our lives will take. Scripture does not discourage planning. In fact, thoughtful preparation is often an expression of good stewardship. But this proverb reminds us that planning is only part of the story. “A man’s heart plans his course…” God has given us minds to think, discern, and prepare. We are invited to use those gifts. There is nothing wrong with making plans, pursuing goals, or dreaming about what lies ahead.
 
Pause and reflect: What plans am I holding right now? Are there hopes, decisions, or goals that occupy your thoughts? Have you invited God into them, or are you carrying them by your own strength? “…but the LORD determines his steps.” This is both humbling and comforting. It reminds us that while we may see the destination we desire, God sees every step along the way. Sometimes He confirms our plans. Sometimes He redirects them. Sometimes He asks us to wait. And sometimes He leads us down a path we never would have chosen, only to discover later that His way was wiser than our own. God’s direction is not a sign that our planning has failed. It is evidence that He is actively involved in our lives. There may be moments when a closed door disappoints us. There may be unexpected opportunities that change our direction. There may be delays that seem frustrating. Yet often, with the perspective of time, we recognize that God was guiding us with wisdom we could not yet see.
 
Today, consider one plan you are holding tightly. Offer it to God. You might pray, “Lord, these are my plans, but I trust You to direct my steps.” Then move forward with both diligence and openness. Plan carefully. Work faithfully. But hold your plans with open hands. For the greatest confidence is not that everything will unfold according to your expectations. It is that every step is known by the God who walks beside you. And wherever He leads, His wisdom will always be greater than your own.
 
 
Heavenly Father,
 
Thank You for caring about every step of my journey. Thank You for giving me wisdom to plan, while also reminding me that You alone see the whole path before me.
 
Help me to make my plans with humility and to hold them with open hands. Give me the grace to accept Your direction, even when it differs from my own expectations. Guide my steps today, and teach me to trust Your wisdom above my own.
 
I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
