September 14 — Growing in Grace

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”
— 2 Peter 3:18
 
 
Growth is one of the clearest signs of life. Healthy trees continue to grow. Healthy relationships continue to deepen. Healthy faith continues to mature. Peter's final words to the early church were not merely to remain faithful. They were to keep growing. “But grow…” Spiritual growth is never meant to stop. There is no point in the Christian life where we have learned everything, loved perfectly, or become fully mature. As long as God gives us breath, He continues His gracious work of shaping us into the likeness of Christ.
 
Pause and reflect: How have I grown in my walk with Christ during the past year? Where do you see evidence of God's transforming work? In what areas might He now be inviting you to continue growing? “…in the grace…” We often think of grace as the way we begin the Christian life. Indeed, we are saved by grace. But we also grow by grace. Every step of spiritual maturity depends upon God's continued kindness, patience, forgiveness, and strength. Grace is not only the doorway into God's family. It is the atmosphere in which His children live every day. “…and knowledge…” Peter is not speaking merely of gathering information. He is speaking of knowing Christ personally. The more time we spend with Him... The more we trust Him... The more we obey Him... The more deeply we come to know His heart. Knowledge of Christ is relational. It grows through daily fellowship. “…of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Notice that Peter joins these two titles together. Jesus is our Savior, who rescues us from sin. He is also our Lord, who lovingly guides every part of our lives. Growth happens as we continually trust Him in both roles. Receiving His forgiveness. Following His leadership. “…To Him be the glory…” Peter reminds us why spiritual growth matters. It is not so that others will admire us. It is so that Christ will be glorified. Every act of kindness. Every word of encouragement. Every step of obedience. Every evidence of the Spirit's fruit. Each points beyond ourselves to the goodness of our Lord.
 
Today, do not become discouraged if you still see areas where you need to grow. The very desire to become more like Christ is itself evidence that His Spirit is at work within you. Growth is often slow. Sometimes almost imperceptible. Yet God is faithful. Just as a gardener patiently tends every plant in the garden, our Heavenly Father patiently nurtures our lives. You might quietly pray, "Lord Jesus, help me to continue growing in Your grace and in knowing You more deeply." Then entrust yourself to His care. He is not finished with you. The lessons continue. The growth continues. The grace continues. And with every passing day, the Holy Spirit is gently shaping you into a clearer reflection of Jesus Christ. That is the beautiful work God has promised to complete.
 

Heavenly Father,
 
Thank You for the grace that first brought me to Christ and for the grace that continues to sustain me each day. Thank You that You patiently continue Your work of transformation within me.
 
Help me to keep growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus. Give me a teachable heart, a willing spirit, and a deep desire to know Him more fully. May every step of growth bring glory to Your name and draw others to the beauty of Christ. Continue Your faithful work within me until the day I see my Savior face to face.
 
I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
