September 19 — Encouraging One Another

“Therefore encourage and build one another up, just as you are already doing.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:11
 
 
Words have remarkable power. A few thoughtful words can lift a discouraged heart. A timely reminder of God's faithfulness can restore hope. A sincere expression of gratitude can strengthen a weary soul. God has given us the ability to build others up through the things we say and the way we live. “Therefore encourage…” The word encourage literally means to come alongside another person. It is more than offering compliments. It is strengthening someone who is weary. Comforting someone who is grieving. Giving hope to someone who is struggling. Reminding another believer that God has not forgotten them. Encouragement helps people continue the journey when they feel like giving up.
 
Pause and reflect: Who in my life might need encouragement today? Is there someone carrying a heavy burden, facing uncertainty, or quietly growing weary? How might God use your words or your presence to strengthen that person? “…and build one another up…” Paul uses the image of constructing a building. Every conversation either strengthens or weakens the lives of those around us. Our words can become stones that support another person's faith. Or they can become burdens that discourage them. Followers of Christ are called to be builders. We intentionally look for opportunities to strengthen others. “…one another…” Encouragement is not the responsibility of a few gifted people. It is the calling of the entire Christian community. Every believer has the ability to encourage. A smile. A handwritten note. A phone call. A prayer. A thoughtful question. A listening ear. Often the smallest expressions of care become the greatest sources of hope. “…just as you are already doing.” Paul begins with gratitude. He recognizes the good that is already happening among the believers. There is wisdom in this. Encouragement often begins by noticing what God is already doing in another person's life. We become generous in expressing appreciation. Quick to affirm faithfulness. Ready to celebrate growth.
 
Today, ask God to place someone on your heart. Perhaps a family member. A friend. A neighbor. Someone from your church. Or someone you have not spoken with for quite some time. Reach out. Offer a kind word. Share a Scripture. Express gratitude. Pray with them if the opportunity arises. You might quietly pray, "Lord, show me someone I can encourage today." Then remain attentive. The Holy Spirit has a wonderful way of bringing people to mind at exactly the right moment. Never underestimate what God can do through a simple act of encouragement. A few sincere words may become an answer to someone else's prayer. A small kindness may restore hope to a weary heart. A quiet reminder of God's faithfulness may help another believer continue the race. For encouragement is one of the beautiful ways that Christ continues to care for His people through the lives of those who follow Him. And every time you strengthen another person in His name, you reflect the compassionate heart of your Savior.

Thank You for the many people who have encouraged me throughout my journey of faith. Thank You for using their words, prayers, and kindness to strengthen my heart.
 
Help me to become that kind of encouragement to others. Open my eyes to those who are weary, discouraged, or lonely. Give me words that bring hope, actions that build others up, and a heart that delights in serving Your people. May my life become a source of encouragement that reflects the love and compassion of Jesus Christ.
