September 16 — Walking Humbly with God

“He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”
— Micah 6:8
 
 
People often wonder what God truly desires from His children. Is it found in impressive accomplishments? Lengthy prayers? Religious rituals? Public recognition? Through the prophet Micah, God gives a wonderfully simple and deeply challenging answer. “What does the LORD require of you…” God is not asking for something beyond our reach. He is inviting us into a way of life. A life that reflects His own character. Micah describes that life with three beautiful expressions. “…to act justly…” Justice begins with treating people as those created in the image of God. It means being honest in our dealings. Fair in our decisions. Faithful in our commitments. It also means noticing when others are treated unfairly and caring enough to respond with compassion and integrity. Justice is love expressed in action.
 
Pause and reflect: How can I practice justice in the ordinary moments of today? Are there opportunities to act with greater fairness, honesty, or compassion? Is there someone whose dignity or worth needs to be recognized through your words or actions? “…to love mercy…” Notice that Micah does not simply say to show mercy. He says to love mercy. Mercy reflects the heart of God. It chooses forgiveness over resentment. Compassion over indifference. Grace over judgment. Jesus loved mercy.
He welcomed sinners. He restored the broken. He forgave those who had failed. He invites us to become people who delight in extending the same grace we have received. “…and to walk humbly…” Humility is not thinking less of ourselves. It is thinking of ourselves rightly before God. It recognizes that every blessing comes from His hand. Every ability is a gift. Every opportunity is an expression of His grace. A humble person does not seek recognition. A humble person seeks faithfulness. “…with your God.” Perhaps the most beautiful part of this verse is the word with. God does not merely give us instructions and send us on our way. He walks with us. Every act of justice. Every expression of mercy. Every step of humility. He is present. Guiding. Strengthening. Encouraging. The Christian life is not about walking ahead of God or trying to keep up with Him. It is about walking with Him.
 
Today, consider these three simple questions: Am I acting justly? Am I loving mercy? Am I walking humbly with God? You might quietly pray, "Lord, help me to reflect Your heart today." Then walk into every conversation and every responsibility with the quiet awareness that God is walking beside you. As He shapes your heart, justice becomes more natural. Mercy becomes more joyful. Humility becomes more genuine. And your life becomes a living testimony to the goodness of the God with whom you walk. For there is no greater privilege than to spend each day walking with the One who loves you completely and is continually making you more like His Son.
 

Heavenly Father,
 
Thank You for showing me what is good and for inviting me to walk closely with You. Thank You for Your perfect justice, Your abundant mercy, and Your humble love revealed through Jesus Christ.
 
Help me to act justly in every situation, to delight in showing mercy to others, and to walk humbly before You each day. Keep me aware of Your presence and teach me to follow wherever You lead. May my life reflect Your heart so that others may see Your goodness and be drawn to You.
