September 5 — Kindness That Reflects Christ

“Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.”
— Ephesians 4:32

Kindness is often expressed through small things. A gentle word. A patient response. A thoughtful act. A willingness to listen. These moments may seem ordinary, yet Scripture teaches that they reveal something extraordinary—the character of Christ at work within us. “Be kind…” Kindness is more than good manners or a pleasant personality. It is a deliberate choice to seek the good of another person. Jesus demonstrated this throughout His ministry. He spoke with compassion to those whom others ignored. He welcomed children. He touched those considered untouchable. He noticed people whom the crowds overlooked. His kindness was never accidental. It was the natural expression of His heart.

Pause and reflect: How do the people around me experience my presence? Do my words and actions make others feel valued, heard, and loved? In what ways might Christ be inviting me to show greater kindness today? “…and tenderhearted…” A tender heart is not a weak heart. It is a heart that remains open to the joys and sorrows of others. It refuses to become hardened by disappointment or indifference. Jesus looked upon people with compassion because He truly saw them. He saw their struggles. Their fears. Their loneliness. Their hopes. He invites us to see others in the same way. “…forgiving each other…” Forgiveness is one of the clearest expressions of Christlike character. It does not deny that wrong has been done. Nor does it pretend that hurt does not matter. Rather, forgiveness chooses not to let bitterness have the final word. It entrusts justice to God and frees the heart from the burden of resentment. “…just as in Christ God forgave you.” Here Paul gives us both the reason and the strength to forgive. We forgive because we have been forgiven. Every time we remember the grace God has shown us through Christ, our hearts become more willing to extend that same grace to others. This is not always easy. Some wounds take time to heal. Some acts of forgiveness must be renewed again and again. Yet every step toward forgiveness is a step toward becoming more like Jesus.

Today, ask yourself where Christ's kindness can be seen through you. Perhaps it is in speaking gently to someone who is discouraged. Perhaps it is offering patience when you are tempted to become frustrated. Perhaps it is extending forgiveness where hurt has lingered. You might quietly pray, "Lord Jesus, let Your kindness flow through me today." Then remember that every interaction is an opportunity to reflect His heart. For people may not always remember every word you say. But they will often remember how you made them feel. May they leave your presence with a greater sense of hope... Because they have encountered the kindness of Christ through you.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the immeasurable kindness and forgiveness You have shown me through Jesus Christ. Thank You for loving me with a tender heart even when I have fallen short.

Help me to reflect that same kindness to others. Give me compassion for those who are hurting, patience with those who test me, and a forgiving spirit that mirrors Your grace. May my words, my actions, and my attitude reveal the kindness of Christ to everyone I meet today.

I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
