August 22 — The Peace That Jesus Gives
“Peace I leave with
you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not
let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.”
Peace is one of the
greatest longings of the human heart. We search for it in stable circumstances,
healthy relationships, financial security, and predictable routines. While
these blessings can certainly bring comfort, they cannot provide a peace that
endures through every season. Jesus offers something different. “Peace I leave
with you…” These words were spoken on the night before His crucifixion. Jesus
knew that His disciples would soon experience confusion, grief, fear, and
uncertainty. Yet in that very moment, He spoke not of despair, but of peace. His
peace was not dependent upon favorable circumstances. It flowed from His
perfect relationship with the Father.
Pause and reflect: Where
have I been looking for peace? Have you been waiting for your circumstances
to improve before expecting peace? Or are you learning to receive the peace
that Christ offers even in the midst of uncertainty? “My peace I give to you.” Notice
the personal nature of this promise. Jesus does not merely give peace. He gives
His peace. The same peace that sustained Him through misunderstanding,
opposition, suffering, and even the cross is the peace He now offers to His
followers. It is a gift. Not something we achieve. Not something we earn. Something
we receive. “I do not give to you as the world gives.” The world's peace is
often temporary. It depends upon everything going according to plan. It
disappears when circumstances change. Christ's peace is different. It remains
when answers are delayed. It remains when the future is uncertain. It remains
because its foundation is not circumstances. Its foundation is Christ Himself. “Do
not let your hearts be troubled…” Jesus acknowledges that troubling
circumstances will come. His invitation is not to deny reality. It is to guard
our hearts from becoming ruled by fear. “…and do not be afraid.” Fear speaks
loudly. But the voice of Christ speaks more deeply. Again and again He reminds
us that His presence is greater than our fears.
Today, whenever anxious
thoughts begin to rise, pause for a moment. Take a slow breath. Remember these
words of Jesus. You might quietly pray, "Lord Jesus, fill my heart with
Your peace." Then receive His gift. Not the fragile peace that depends
upon everything working perfectly. But the lasting peace that comes from
knowing you belong to Christ. The world around you may still be unsettled. Questions
may still remain. The future may still be unknown. Yet beneath it all, the
peace of Christ can steady your heart. For His peace is not the absence of
trouble. It is the presence of the Savior. And wherever He is present, there is
peace.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of peace that comes through Jesus Christ. Thank You that His peace is greater than my fears and deeper than my circumstances.
Help me to receive this gift each day. When my heart becomes troubled, remind me that Christ is with me. Replace my anxiety with His peace and my fear with confidence in Your faithful presence. May the peace of Christ guard my heart and mind today and always.
I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
