August 20 — The Lord Goes Before You

“The LORD Himself goes before you; He will be with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”
— Deuteronomy 31:8

There are moments when the future feels uncertain. A new responsibility, a difficult decision, an unexpected change, or an unfamiliar season can leave us wondering what lies ahead. We naturally wish we could see the entire path before taking the first step. Moses spoke these words to Joshua as leadership of Israel was about to pass from one generation to the next. Joshua faced an enormous responsibility. The road before him was filled with challenges he had never encountered before. Yet God's first promise was not that the journey would be easy. It was that God Himself would go first. “The LORD Himself goes before you…” Before you arrive at tomorrow, God is already there. Before you face the conversation that concerns you... Before you enter the situation that seems uncertain... Before you take the next step in your journey... God has already gone ahead of you.

Pause and reflect: What future situation causes me the greatest uncertainty today? Are you trying to prepare for something you cannot fully control? How might your outlook change if you remembered that God is already present in the place you have not yet reached? “He will be with you.” God's promise includes both His guidance and His presence. He goes before you to prepare the way. He walks beside you through the journey. He remains behind you as your faithful protector. Wherever you are, you are never beyond His presence. “He will never leave you nor forsake you.” Throughout Scripture, this promise appears again and again because we need to hear it again and again. People may disappoint us. Circumstances may change. Feelings may fluctuate. But God's commitment to His children never changes. His presence is not based upon your performance. It is grounded in His faithfulness. “Do not be afraid or discouraged.” Fear often grows when we focus only on what lies ahead. Courage grows when we remember who goes with us. This does not mean we will never feel anxious. It means that anxiety does not have the final word. God's presence does.

Today, as you think about the days ahead, resist the temptation to imagine yourself facing them alone.
Instead, picture the Lord already walking before you. You might quietly pray, "Lord, thank You for going before me." Then step into today with confidence. You do not know everything the future holds.
But you know the One who holds the future. He has already gone before you. He walks beside you now. And He will remain with you through every step that is still to come. Because of that, you can move forward—not with fear, but with quiet confidence in the unfailing presence of God.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for going before me in every season of life. When I look ahead and feel uncertain, remind me that You are already there, preparing the way and walking beside me.

Help me to trust Your faithful presence more than my anxious thoughts. Replace my fear with courage, my discouragement with hope, and my uncertainty with confidence in Your promises. Thank You that You will never leave me nor forsake me. May I walk forward today in the assurance that You are always with me.

I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
