May 16 — Seeking First the Kingdom

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.”
— Matthew 6:33

Life has a way of filling itself quickly. Responsibilities, concerns, goals, and distractions compete for our attention. Before long, our priorities can become shaped by urgency rather than by purpose. In the midst of this, Jesus offers a clear and steady invitation: seek first the kingdom of God. Not eventually, not occasionally—but first.

To seek God’s kingdom is to orient our lives around His rule and His ways. It is to ask, in both large and small matters, “What reflects God’s heart here?” It is to value what He values—righteousness, love, humility, and faithfulness—above the shifting demands of the moment. This seeking is not a one-time decision, but a daily posture.

Take a moment to reflect: What am I seeking first? What occupies your attention when you begin your day? What drives your decisions, your concerns, and your energy? It is easy for good things—work, responsibilities, even service—to take the central place that belongs to God alone.

Today, begin by placing God first intentionally. Before moving into your responsibilities, pause and seek Him—through prayer, Scripture, or quiet reflection. As you move through your day, return to this posture. When faced with decisions, ask, “How can I seek God’s kingdom here?” Let that question gently guide your actions.

Jesus’ promise is not that life will become free of need or challenge, but that when God is first, everything else finds its proper place. Worry loosens its hold. Priorities become clearer. And the heart becomes steadier, anchored in what truly matters.

Loving Father,

Thank You for calling me to seek Your kingdom above all else. I confess that I often allow other concerns to take first place in my life. Draw my heart back to You.

Help me to seek You at the beginning of my day and throughout all that I do. Align my desires with Your will, and guide my decisions with Your wisdom. Teach me to trust that as I put You first, You will provide for all that I need. Let my life reflect Your kingdom and Your righteousness in every way.

All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
