May 22 — Called to Be Salt and Light

“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.”
— Matthew 5:13-14

Jesus does not say, “You should become salt and light.” He says, “You are.” This is not merely a calling to strive toward, but an identity to live out. Salt preserves and enhances what it touches. Light reveals, guides, and brings clarity. In the same way, the life of a believer—shaped by the Spirit—has a quiet but meaningful influence on the world around them.

Salt does its work subtly. It does not draw attention to itself, yet it changes what it touches. Light, on the other hand, cannot be hidden. Even a small light makes a difference in darkness. Together, these images remind us that our lives are meant to reflect Christ—not through force or display, but through faithful presence.

Take a moment to reflect: Where has God placed me to be salt and light? It may be in your home, your workplace, your church, or your community. These are not accidental settings—they are the very places where your influence matters. How do your words, actions, and attitudes shape the environment around you?

Today, choose to live with quiet intention. Offer encouragement where there is discouragement. Speak truth with grace. Act with integrity, even in small matters. You may not see immediate results, but your presence matters more than you realize.

Over time, being salt and light becomes less about what you try to do and more about who you are becoming. As Christ’s life is formed within you, His light begins to shine through you—naturally, steadily, and meaningfully.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for calling me to be salt and light in the world. Help me to live in a way that reflects Your presence and Your truth. Teach me to influence others with humility, grace, and faithfulness.

Guide my words and actions so that they bring encouragement, clarity, and hope. When I feel unnoticed or unsure, remind me that You are at work through even the smallest acts of faithfulness. Let Your light shine through me, wherever You have placed me.

I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
