May 31 — Abiding in What Matters Most

“I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.”
— John 15:5

As this month comes to a close, we are invited to return to a simple and essential truth: life with God is not sustained by effort alone, but by connection. Jesus uses the image of a vine and branches to describe this relationship. A branch does not produce fruit by striving harder. It bears fruit by remaining connected to the vine. Its life, strength, and nourishment all flow from that connection. In the same way, our spiritual lives are not meant to be driven by constant striving, but by abiding—remaining in Christ.

Pause and reflect: What have I been relying on most this month—my own effort, or my connection to Christ? Have you found yourself trying to manage, fix, or carry things on your own? Or have there been moments where you have rested in His presence and trusted Him to work through you?

Abiding is both simple and intentional. It is choosing to stay close—to return again and again to prayer, to Scripture, and to an awareness of God’s presence throughout the day. It is not about perfection, but about persistence in relationship.

Today, take time to simply be with God. Not to accomplish, not to produce, but to remain. You might sit quietly and pray, “Lord, help me to remain in You.” Let that be enough for this moment.

Over time, fruit begins to grow—not because of striving, but because of connection. Character is formed. Love deepens. Peace becomes steadier. And what is produced is not something you have forced, but something God has grown within you.

As you move into a new month, carry this with you: the most important thing is not how much you do, but how closely you remain with Him.

Loving Father,

Thank You for inviting me into a life of abiding in Your Son. Forgive me for the times I have relied on my own strength instead of remaining connected to You.

Teach me to stay close to You each day. Help me to rest in Your presence and to trust You to produce fruit in my life. As I move forward, keep my heart anchored in You above all else.

All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
