August 26 — Let the Peace of Christ Rule
“Let the peace of
Christ rule in your hearts, for to this you were called as members of one body.
And be thankful.”
Every day we are faced
with countless voices competing for our attention. Some voices stir anxiety. Others
feed resentment or impatience. Still others tempt us to become discouraged or
fearful. In the midst of all these competing influences, Paul offers a simple
but profound instruction: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” The
word rule carries the image of an umpire or referee—one who makes
decisions and settles disputes. Paul is inviting us to allow the peace that
comes from Christ to become the deciding influence in our hearts.
Pause and reflect: What
has been ruling my heart lately? Have your thoughts been governed by fear,
frustration, ambition, or worry? Or have you been allowing the peace of Christ
to shape your responses and guide your decisions? “The peace of Christ…” This
is not merely a peaceful feeling. It is the peace that Christ Himself possesses
and shares with those who belong to Him. It is the peace He demonstrated when
storms raged around Him. The peace He displayed before His accusers. The peace
that remained even as He entrusted Himself to the Father's will. This peace
becomes available to us because we are united with Him. “…rule in your hearts…”
Paul's instruction suggests that we have a choice. We cannot always control our
circumstances. We cannot prevent anxious thoughts from appearing. But we can
choose which voice we will follow. When fear speaks, we can listen instead to
Christ's promises. When resentment rises, we can remember His forgiveness. When
discouragement settles in, we can recall His faithfulness. The peace of Christ
becomes the steady guide that directs our hearts toward trust rather than fear.
“…for to this you were called…” Peace is not an occasional blessing reserved
for unusually calm seasons of life. It is part of our calling as followers of
Jesus. As we grow in Him, His peace increasingly shapes our attitudes,
relationships, and decisions. “…as members of one body.” Paul reminds us that
Christ's peace is also meant to strengthen our relationships with one another. A
heart ruled by Christ's peace is more patient. More forgiving. More
compassionate. More willing to seek reconciliation. The peace we receive from
Christ naturally becomes peace that we share with others. “And be thankful.” It
is no accident that Paul ends with gratitude. A thankful heart is fertile
ground for peace. As we remember God's goodness, our fears begin to lose their
grip. Gratitude gently redirects our attention from what we lack to the
abundance of God's grace.
Today, whenever you feel
your heart becoming unsettled, pause before reacting. Ask yourself, "Is
the peace of Christ ruling my heart right now?" Then quietly pray, "Lord
Jesus, let Your peace guide my thoughts, my words, and my actions today." As
you do, you may discover that His peace becomes more than a comforting feeling.
It becomes a faithful guide. A quiet strength. A steady presence that enables
you to reflect the character of Christ wherever you go.

Colossians 3:15
Thank You for the gift of Christ's peace. Help me to let His peace rule in my heart above every fear, frustration, and anxious thought.
Teach me to respond to others with patience, kindness, and forgiveness, reflecting the peace You have given me. Fill my heart with gratitude for Your constant faithfulness, and let thankfulness shape the way I live each day. May Your peace guide my thoughts, my words, and my actions, so that my life brings honor to You.
I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
