June 22 — Joy in the Midst of Trials

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Allow perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
— James 1:2-4

Trials are not something we naturally welcome. They interrupt our plans, stretch our patience, and often bring discomfort or uncertainty. When difficulties arise, our instinct is usually to avoid them, resolve them quickly, or simply endure them until they pass. Yet James offers a surprising perspective. “Consider it pure joy…” This does not mean that trials are pleasant or easy. It means that within them, something meaningful is taking place. Trials become the setting where faith is tested—and through that testing, something stronger begins to form. “…the testing of your faith develops perseverance.” Perseverance is not formed in comfort. It grows through challenge, through staying steady when things are difficult. It is the quiet strength to continue, even when the outcome is unclear.

Pause and reflect: What trial am I facing right now? How have you been responding to it—with resistance, frustration, or discouragement? What might it look like to see this situation through a different lens? “Allow perseverance to finish its work…” There is a process unfolding. Growth takes time, and perseverance needs space to develop fully. When we remain present, rather than rushing to escape the difficulty, something deeper is formed within us.

Today, consider bringing your current challenge before God with openness. You might pray, “Lord, help me to trust You in this.” Ask Him not only for relief, but for strength and perspective as you walk through it. You do not need to pretend that trials are easy. But you can trust that they are not without purpose. Over time, what feels difficult now can become a place of growth—shaping your faith, strengthening your character, and leading you toward a deeper sense of wholeness.

Loving Father,

You see the challenges I am facing and the weight they sometimes carry. Thank You that even in these moments, You are at work within me.

Help me to trust You in the midst of trials. Give me perseverance to continue, and shape my faith through what I am experiencing. Teach me to see beyond the difficulty to the growth You are bringing. Strengthen me, and bring me to a place of maturity and completeness in You.

All this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
