June 17 — Kindness and Forgiveness
“Be kind and
tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God
forgave you.”
Kindness can seem
simple, yet it carries great depth. It is more than politeness or surface-level
niceness. Kindness, as described here, flows from a tenderhearted
posture—a heart that is open, compassionate, and responsive to others. It is
the kind of heart that notices, that cares, and that chooses gentleness even
when it is not required. And closely connected to kindness is forgiveness. “…forgiving
each other just as in Christ God forgave you.” This is both the challenge and
the foundation. Forgiveness is not always easy. It asks us to release what we
may feel justified in holding on to. It invites us to let go of resentment,
even when the hurt is real. Yet we are not asked to forgive in isolation. We
forgive as those who have been forgiven.
Pause and reflect: Is
there someone I need to forgive? Or perhaps, is there someone toward
whom I need to show greater kindness? Sometimes the two are connected. A
lack of forgiveness can harden the heart, making kindness more difficult. But
as forgiveness begins, tenderness can return.
Today, consider one step
toward kindness or forgiveness. It may be an internal step—choosing to release
a grievance before God. Or it may be expressed outwardly—a gentle word, a
softened response, a willingness to move toward reconciliation. You might pray,
“Lord, help me to forgive as You have forgiven me.” This does not mean
ignoring hurt or minimizing what has happened. It means entrusting it to God
and allowing Him to shape your response. Over time, kindness and forgiveness
begin to work together. A tender heart becomes more natural. Grace becomes more
instinctive. And relationships begin to reflect the mercy that has first been
given to you.
Heavenly Father,
—
Ephesians 4:32
Thank You for the kindness and forgiveness You have shown me in Christ. Your grace has been more than I deserve.
Help me to be kind and tenderhearted toward others. Give me the strength to forgive where it is difficult, and the humility to reflect Your mercy. Soften my heart, and shape my life to reflect Your love.
I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
