June 23 — Hope That Does Not Disappoint
“Not only that, but
we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces
perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not
disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the
Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.”
There is a progression
that unfolds in difficult seasons. Suffering is not the end of the story. It
becomes the beginning of a deeper work—one that shapes us from the inside out.
Paul traces this movement carefully, showing how what feels heavy can lead to
something steady and lasting. “Suffering produces perseverance…” In hardship,
we learn to remain. We continue forward, even when it is not easy. This
perseverance becomes a foundation—quiet, steady, and strong. “…perseverance,
character…” Over time, perseverance shapes who we are. It forms integrity,
depth, and resilience. Character is not built in a moment; it is developed
through consistent faithfulness in the midst of challenge. “…and character,
hope.” Hope emerges not as wishful thinking, but as something grounded—something
that has been tested and proven. It is the confidence that God is present and
faithful, even when circumstances are uncertain.
Pause and reflect: Where
do I see this progression in my life? Are there difficulties you have faced
that have quietly shaped your perseverance or character? Can you begin to see
how hope has taken root, even if only in small ways? “And hope does not
disappoint…” This hope is different because it is anchored in God’s love. It is
not dependent on outcomes alone, but on the assurance that His love is already
present within you.
Today, consider naming
one way you have seen God sustain you through difficulty. Give thanks for that
work. And if you are currently in a hard season, you might pray, “Lord, grow
hope within me.” You may not see the full picture yet. But the process is
unfolding. And within it, God is shaping something lasting—a hope that will not
fail.
Heavenly Father,
—
Romans 5:3-5
Thank You for the work You are doing in my life, even through difficult seasons. You know where I am struggling and where I need Your strength.
Help me to persevere with trust, and shape my character through what I am facing. Grow within me a hope that is steady and rooted in Your love. Remind me that Your love is present with me, even now.
I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
